The Problem with AI-Generated Content


AI-generated content is everywhere now. Blog posts, marketing copy, social media content, product descriptions, news articles—increasingly, what you read online was written by AI with minimal human involvement.

This isn’t inherently bad. AI tools can be genuinely useful for content creation when used thoughtfully. The problem is how they’re actually being used: to flood the internet with low-quality content optimized for search engines and engagement metrics rather than for humans.

Let’s talk about what’s going wrong and why it matters.

The Quality Floor Has Dropped

AI writing tools have gotten very good at producing grammatically correct, coherent text. What they consistently fail at is producing interesting, insightful, or genuinely useful content.

The output is bland. It lacks voice, personality, and original thinking. AI excels at synthesizing existing information into new combinations, but it can’t add genuine insight or expertise beyond what exists in its training data.

This creates a problem: the internet is filling up with content that sounds fine but says nothing new. Articles that are technically accurate but utterly generic. Copy that’s grammatically perfect but completely forgettable.

For readers, this is a degraded experience. Finding actually useful information requires sifting through increasing amounts of AI-generated filler. The signal-to-noise ratio of the internet is getting worse.

The Feedback Loop Problem

Here’s where it gets concerning: AI models are trained on internet content. As more of that content becomes AI-generated, future AI models train on AI output rather than human-created content.

This creates a degradation loop. Each generation of AI trains on slightly worse content, producing slightly worse output, which goes into the training data for the next generation. The cumulative effect is a steady decline in quality.

We’re already seeing this in some domains. Search for technical questions and you’ll increasingly find AI-generated answers that are just paraphrases of other AI-generated answers, none of which actually solve the problem. The original human expertise gets buried under layers of AI synthesis.

Search Engine Spam

The primary use case for AI content generation is SEO spam. Create thousands of articles optimized for specific keywords to rank in search engines and drive traffic that can be monetized through ads or affiliate links.

This worked frighteningly well for a while. Entire websites running entirely on AI-generated content ranked highly in Google and drove significant traffic. The fact that the content was essentially useless to readers didn’t matter—the economics worked.

Search engines are fighting back with algorithm updates targeting AI content, but it’s an arms race. As detection improves, generation techniques evolve to avoid detection. The fundamentals haven’t changed: there’s money in ranking for keywords, and AI makes it cheap to produce content at scale.

The result is that searching for almost anything now returns pages of AI-generated content of dubious value mixed with actually useful human-written content. Finding the signal in the noise is harder than it should be.

Academic Integrity Questions

Students are using AI to write essays, assignments, and thesis sections. Some institutions report that more than 50% of submitted work shows signs of AI assistance.

This creates several problems. Students aren’t learning the critical thinking and writing skills that assignments are meant to develop. Academic institutions struggle to detect AI usage reliably. And the entire assessment model built on written work is being undermined.

Some educators argue this just requires adapting assessment methods. Others see it as a fundamental challenge to how we evaluate learning. Either way, the traditional essay assignment is increasingly unviable when students can generate passable work in seconds.

The Creativity Ceiling

AI is excellent at producing variations on existing patterns. It’s terrible at genuine creativity or breaking new ground. This matters more than it might seem.

Content creation isn’t just about efficiently producing text—it’s about exploring ideas, challenging assumptions, and offering novel perspectives. AI does none of that. It recombines, it averages, it produces the most statistically likely continuation based on training data.

As AI-generated content proliferates, we risk losing the diversity of voices and perspectives that makes human creativity valuable. Everything trends toward the mean, toward the most common patterns, toward blandness.

This is particularly concerning in creative fields like journalism, marketing, and storytelling where unique voices and perspectives are what create value.

Job Market Disruption

Content writers, copywriters, and junior journalists are seeing their roles automated or degraded. Why pay a human to write product descriptions or basic news articles when AI can do it for pennies?

The counter-argument is that this frees humans to do higher-value work while AI handles routine content. That’s partly true, but it also means fewer entry-level opportunities for people developing their skills.

The writing profession has historically had a pyramid structure: many junior people doing basic work while learning, fewer mid-level practitioners, and a small number of senior experts. AI is potentially collapsing that pyramid by automating the bottom rungs.

If junior writers can’t get experience writing basic content because AI is doing it, where do future senior writers come from? This isn’t just a job market question—it’s about how expertise develops in creative fields.

When AI Content Works

Not all AI-generated content is bad. There are legitimate use cases where it adds value:

First drafts that humans then edit and refine. AI handles the blank page problem and provides structure that gets improved.

Personalization at scale where you need to generate similar content for thousands of variations (product descriptions, automated emails, etc.). AI makes this economically feasible.

Translation and localization where AI provides initial translations that humans refine. Faster and cheaper than pure human translation while maintaining quality through human oversight.

Code generation where AI suggests implementations that developers review and modify. This is actually one of the more successful applications of generative AI.

The pattern: AI works well when humans remain in the loop, providing judgment, refinement, and quality control. It fails when it’s used end-to-end without human oversight.

The Detection Arms Race

Tools for detecting AI-generated content have emerged. They analyze writing patterns, vocabulary choices, and structural markers that indicate AI authorship.

These work to a degree, but they’re not reliable. False positives flag human writing as AI-generated. False negatives miss AI content. And as detection improves, generation techniques evolve to avoid detection markers.

Some institutions and platforms require disclosure of AI usage. Others ban it outright. Neither approach fully solves the problem. Disclosure works only if people are honest. Bans work only if you can enforce them.

The fundamental issue is that AI-generated content is approaching human quality in many contexts. Distinguishing them reliably becomes increasingly difficult, perhaps impossible.

What This Means for Readers

As a consumer of content, assume increasing amounts of what you read online is AI-generated. This means:

Be skeptical of generic content. If it sounds like it could have been written by anyone about anything, it probably was (by AI).

Value expertise and unique perspectives. Content that demonstrates genuine expertise or offers original insights is increasingly rare and valuable.

Look for human markers. Personal anecdotes, specific examples, unusual word choices, clear personality—these suggest human authorship.

Use multiple sources. Don’t rely on a single article or source. Cross-reference to find the actual human expertise underneath the AI synthesis.

What This Means for Creators

If you create content, AI is both opportunity and threat. The opportunity is using AI tools to work more efficiently. The threat is being replaced by AI entirely.

The defense is to create content that AI can’t replicate: deeply researched, expertly informed, uniquely voiced, genuinely creative. The more generic your content, the more vulnerable you are to AI automation.

Develop expertise that goes beyond surface-level knowledge. Build a distinctive voice. Create content that demonstrates original thinking rather than synthesizing existing information. These are things AI currently can’t do well.

The Regulatory Question

Should AI-generated content be regulated? Labeled? Banned in certain contexts? These questions are being actively debated.

Europe is moving toward requiring disclosure of AI-generated content in some contexts. Academic institutions are establishing policies around AI usage. Social media platforms are experimenting with labels for AI content.

None of these approaches are perfect, and enforcement remains challenging. But some level of regulation seems inevitable as the volume of AI content grows and quality concerns mount.

The Long-Term Trajectory

Where does this go? A few possibilities:

Increasing bifurcation between high-quality human content and low-quality AI content, with readers learning to distinguish and preferring the former.

AI quality improvement to the point where distinction becomes meaningless and we just accept that most content is AI-generated.

Platform and search engine filtering that successfully identifies and deprioritizes low-quality AI content, maintaining quality despite increasing volume.

Content oversupply where the sheer volume of content (AI and human) makes discovery and curation the primary challenge rather than creation.

Most likely, we’ll see some combination. AI content will improve, detection and filtering will improve, and human expertise will become more valuable precisely because it’s scarcer.

The Bottom Line

AI-generated content is a powerful tool being used primarily to create low-value spam. This is degrading the quality of information available online, creating economic pressure on content creators, and raising difficult questions about authenticity and trust.

The technology itself is neutral. The problem is the incentives: there’s money in volume, and AI makes volume cheap. Until that changes—through better search algorithms, changed business models, regulation, or cultural shift—the problem will worsen.

For now, approach content with healthy skepticism, value genuine expertise over synthetic content, and if you create content yourself, focus on the things that make human creativity irreplaceable. The AI can handle the generic stuff. Make sure what you’re creating isn’t generic.

The internet is becoming an increasingly AI-filled space. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on whether we use AI to augment human creativity or replace it. Current trends aren’t encouraging, but they’re also not inevitable. What comes next depends on the choices we make about how to use these tools.
